]]>The Frozen Tundra of the Great White North may have temperate summers, but you wouldn't exactly affix the "booming metropolises" of Saskatchewan with the "hotspot" label. Sure Saskatoon and Regina may have it going on more so than any town in the Northwest and Yukon territories in terms of hockey and other hallmarks of Canadian culture, but mobile broadband ability?
Well, doubters may have their doubts, but SaskTel has the Novatel MiFi 2372. The Canadian Crown Corporation operating under the authority of the Saskatchewan Telecommunications act, which recently extended its 3G+ network to 31 more locations province-wide, is giving its customers the chance to access the Internet on-the-go with one of the industry's best mobile hotspots. The convenient device that will allow users to connect wherever Sasktel is available, is capable of download speeds of up to 7.2mbps and can hold up to 16GB of memory with an attached microSD.
You'd think the cost of ferrying around your personal conduit to the entire Internet in such a small package would be slightly prohibitive; but nothing could be further from the truth. SaskTel's plans associated with the Novatel device are more than reasonable. A 3-year contract gets you the device for free; a 2-year commitment comes to $140, and a 1-year deal brings your total to $205. If you're not one for signing your name in blood, you'll have to pony up $270 for the service. Either way, it's a small price to pay to remove that tether to fixed routers and get Saskatchewan-ites moving around like boiling water molecules.
]]>While the boundaries of the United States of America may stretch from "sea to shining sea," the broadband access at points in between can tend to be a bit spotty. As the third largest country in the world in terms of area, there's bound to be more than a few desolate sections where broadband service leaves residents wanting. Determined not to leave those people in the the nooks and crannies of the nation in the technological dust, the FCC is going ahead with it's plan to initiate the "Mobility Fund"- an endowment aimed at spearheading the buildout of 3G and 4G mobile broadband networks in the neglected rural regions
of the U.S.
Currently up to 4 million Americans have little to no 3G service due to their habitation of geographically inconvenient areas, barely populated towns or places too distant from network centers. The prior stipulations and standards of the Universal Service Fund (USF), which aimed to assist in the spread of telecommunication service deployment to the farms and more rustic regions, just weren't cutting it. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski called the status quo "unsustainable" in that it was "designed to support the communications networks of the past, not the future."
Though the technology utilized under the USF may not be of use, the money left over from its operation will come in handy with the implementation of this new program. The Mobility Fund will take between $100 million and $300 Million of capital, some given up by Sprint Nextel and Verizon, for their rural 3G and 4G build out. There's been no talk of the preferred technology of the rural 4G rollout, but it really doesn't seem like the most immediate worry. The most important thing is to get 3G to places where it's lacking first and worry later about LTE vs. WiMax.
Even with the buildout, it isn't guaranteed that the efforts will bring a service of sparkling quality. It's likely that rural deployment won't be without signal issues. We wouldn't be surprised to see an increase in sales of signal boosters to help those with
wireless devices increase their performance on the new network. And if the deployment of 3G to rural areas proves a success we may see a boom of businesses that prefer to operate out of remote regions now that their communications capabilities have been increased, which also stands to benefit the sale of 3G and 4G wireless routers for burgeoning rural work spaces.
We won't know the true effect the implementation of the "mobility fund" will have on the rural reaches of America until the new networks are in place, but for a nation that considers itself a global superpower, having such a large number of citizens so far behind smacks of weakness. Broadband access is quick becoming a pivotal part of national infrastructure, building an information superhighway is as important as building actual highways once was.
Wi-Ex announced 2 new products last week at the CEDIA EXPO: the zBoost Active Antenna Amplifier and the CI YX745. The units can be paired together for maximum the cell phone coverage. The Active Antenna Amplifier will optimize the YX745 by reducing dropped calls, improving cell-phone signal, and improving the speed and signal of aircards, EDGE and 3G technology, smart phones and data on mobile phones. The devices are designed to work in the most challenging applications, such as commercial buildings and large homes.
- Fewer antennas: A zBoost CI external antenna with a zBoost Active Antenna Amplifier can be connected to four zBoost base units while providing a higher quality cell phone signal.
- More distance: Prior to the Active Antenna Amplifier, the maximum distance allowed from the external antenna to the zBoost base unit was 75 feet. With the Active Antenna Amplifier, installers can place the RG-6 where it is convenient (over 250 feet) rather than struggle to keep it less than 75 feet.
- New locations: In the past, some locations were unable to benefit from a zBoost. With the ability to utilize fewer antennas coupled with the use of longer coax cable, contractors can provide an improved cell phone signal to many of those clients who previously were unable to enjoy the increased cell phone signal provided by zBoost.
