About the company:
Proxim was founded in 1979. It was formerly known as Western Multiplex Corporation and changed its name to Proxim Corporation in 2002. The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Proxim Wireless Corporation is a provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play of voice, video, data and mobility to various organizations. Their systems enable a variety of wireless applications including security and surveillance, VoIP, last mile access, enterprise LAN connectivity and Point-to-Point wireless backhaul. They have shipped more than 1.5 million wireless devices to more than 200,000 customers worldwide. Proxim is ISO-9001 certified.
Product Specifications and Features:
The QB-8100 point-to-point system is targeted purely at IP transport. It can be used to backhaul clusters of 3G and 4G cell sites, aggregate traffic from public or private WLAN networks or even as a high-capacity access technology for enterprise campuses or multi-tenant units and machine-to-machine networks. With 300 Mbps data rates and up to 100 Mbps of real TCP/UDP throughout in a complete “Hop in a Box” solution, deployments in networks of all sizes will enjoy a quick return on investment.

Wireless backhaul for cellular voice and data — Very low latency over long distances, eliminating expensive recurring leased line charges and delivering the capability to backhaul the increasing connectivity needs of handhelds.
Last mile/rural broadband wireless access (BWA) — Competitive broadband service access alternative to DSL or cable for residences and T1 or Ethernet for businesses, including high-performance outdoor access. Our MIMO-enabled, low-cost CPEs support WISP business models all over the world
Wireless video surveillance — Capable of supporting more high-definition IP surveillance video streams simultaneously, with a single CPE. Used for monitoring city streets, airports, bridges, seaports, transportation hubs, offices and warehouses.
It uses two Gigabit Ethernet ports, both which support Power-over-Ethernet. One acts as the uplink, the second as a port for local devices, such as a video camera, which can draw the power it needs from the radio unit itself.
QB 8100 makes use of Proxim’s own Wireless Outdoor Routing Protocol, and an array of common network management and security standards. Based on the same radio technology, Proxim plans eventually to introduce a 1Gbps product.
Advantage over others:
There are already 1Gbps radios on the market, including the 1.6Gbps Horizon Dual from Dragonwave. But the Dragonwave product, designed for very high capacity backhaul, has a range of 5 to 7 miles, runs in licensed or unlicensed 11GHz-38GHz bands, and carries a price tag ranging from $12,000 to $30,000.
One of the key selling points for the new Proxim gear will be its prices: The QB-8100 starts at $6,600
With incredible channel capacity & flexibility, excellent spectrum efficiency and a highly evolved prioritization platform tailored to deliver voice, video and data applications, the Tsunami QB-8100 satisfies carriers, wireless service providers and government customers with requirements for fast and reliable 4G wireless backhaul. Leveraging the advantages of OFDM and the latest MiMO radio innovations, the Tsunami QB-8100 draws on Proxim’s proprietary Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol (WORP) to deliver wireless performance in excess of 4G products on the markets today.
Another reason for supporting Proxim:
Proxim is trialing the systems with multiple customers from Europe and Asia who have used it for a wide variety of different applications. Fortune 500 security company ADT is using the radios to backhaul high-bandwidth video streams from its surveillance cameras. Yonder Media is using the system to aggregate traffic from multiple wireless ISPs to create a single high-capacity transport network.
Proxim aims to achieve that capacity boost with both improvements to the radio’s spectral efficiency and increases in spectral bandwidth used. Company CEO Pankaj Manglik says that “Our history is in wireless LAN, but over time, WLAN proved to be not as differentiated a market as it was before,” Manglik said. “We wanted to be in a market where we can differentiate our technology.” Therefore it is on the path of becoming a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play of voice, video, data and mobility to all organizations today.
