Antenna Direction

The direction or radiation pattern of an antenna dictates the area of coverage. Direction is measured in degrees called beamwidths. The beamwidth with reveal if the antenna transmits in a 45-degree angle or a 360-degree radius. Depending on the type of antennas, the antenna will have either a horizontal beamwidth or vertical beamwidth.

The physical structure of the antenna will indicate the type of beamwidth. A directional antenna uses a vertical beamwidth because the physical structure of the antenna causes the radiation pattern to be focused and cone-shaped. Conversely, an omnidirectional antenna has a horizontal beamwidth because the shape of the antenna forces the energy to disperse the signal in all directions.

Directional Antennas

A directional-based antenna is an antenna that radiates a signal in one direction, typically in a 45-degree radius. Since the antenna is focused in one direction, the user experiences increased transmitting and receiving performance with reduced interference. Yagi and wideband antennas are example of a directional-based antenna.

Whether you are using a directional external antenna or a directional internal antenna, the antenna must face the direction of the signal. This means that a directional external antenna such as a wideband antenna must be placed in the direction the network signal originates from in order to receive and transmit the strongest signal. Similarly, an internal directional-based antenna must face the area you want for a greater signal to be provided to that area. For example, if you want to provide a stronger signal to a long or narrow area, a Yagi or wideband antenna is recommended.

Omnidirectional Antennas

An omnidirectional antenna receives a signal and transmits an enhanced signal in all directions, most commonly in a doughnut-shaped pattern. Omni-directional antennas are useful for improving coverage over a large area. The strength of the signal is not as powerful as the signal created by a directional antenna because the signal is dispersed in more directions over a larger surface area.

An external omnidirectional antenna does not need to face the direction of the incoming signal. An external omnidirectional antenna can be placed anywhere outside of the structure and will still receive and transmit a signal. Similarly, a internal directional antenna will be able to disperse a signal in every direction, granting the entire area powerful service. If you do not know where your incoming signal originates from or if you need to provide service to a circular area, an omnidirectional antenna is necessary for receiving the most out of your network.

Gain is an electrical measurement of power. When an antenna transmits a signal, gain describes how well the antenna converts the signal it receives into radio waves. A higher gain dictates the power of the antennas’ transmission range. The gain derived from an antenna adds to a radio frequency signal (RF signal), providing a user with a significantly improved signal.

Gain is measured in dBs. The power that is transited increases in multiples of 3 for every dB. The more gain an antenna gives off, the wider range of coverage that the antenna transmits. It is important to note the gain of antenna because more powerful antennas will be able to communicate with cell towers that are further away from your location.
